SpiritualOT 102: From Awareness to Action — Moving Beyond Knowing Spirituality Is Important to Confidently Integrating It in Daily Practice
(90 minutes)
Designed for OT students and professionals who have completed SpiritualOT 101: Examining The Role of Spirit in OT Practice, this session moves participants from conceptual understanding to practical application. It focuses on confidently integrating spirituality into everyday OT practice.
Building on foundational knowledge, we will explore practical strategies to incorporate spirituality throughout the OT process—from initial evaluation to discharge planning.
Topics include:
• Spiritual assessment tools and approaches tailored to diverse practice settings, from community-based mental health to hand therapy clinics and everything in between
• Translating spiritual information into meaningful, client-centered interventions
• Recognizing when spiritual needs fall outside our professional scope and understanding referral processes to ensure clients’ spiritual needs are addressed
Research shows that experiential learning is essential for mastering complex and sensitive topics like spirituality, empowering therapists to provide truly holistic care with confidence and compassion.
To support this, participants will receive a supplemental experiential assignment focused on spiritual assessment and intervention planning. Because spirituality in OT is often introduced but rarely reinforced through hands-on experience, this assignment offers a practical way to deepen learning. It can be integrated into academic curricula and applied with willing community volunteers or during Level I and Level II fieldwork placements.
This session will inspire and equip you to bring the spirit of OT to life in your daily practice.
