SpiritualOT 101: Examining the Role of Spirit in Occupational Therapy Practice
(90 minutes)
This session is designed for OT students, OT professionals, and anyone interested in understanding the holistic nature of OT and its scope of practice.
As a holistic profession, OT recognizes the inherent interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. Spirituality is explicitly referenced in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (4th Edition)—33 times—and is embedded in several theoretical models, highlighting its essential place in daily practice.
Yet despite this recognition, research shows many therapists feel uncertain or underprepared to address clients’ spiritual needs. This disconnect often begins in OT education, where spirituality is typically introduced at a conceptual—or surface—level but not fully integrated into the curriculum.
This presentation invites participants to explore the role of spirituality in OT through historical context, theoretical foundations, and current evidence. Interactive elements—such as self-reflection and group discussion—will deepen understanding and support the integration of knowledge into practice.
Developing both an understanding of spirituality and the comfort to engage with clients’ spiritual needs is not merely a learning objective—it is a professional responsibility and essential to delivering truly client-centered.
